Peek a boo! If this offends you take that as a warning, It'll only get weirder from here...
Alright, so throughout the years I've spent countless hours researching many artists and art movements in order to further develop my own style. One of my favourite movements I've discovered was the Ero-Guro ( "Ero" for Erotic and "Guro" for Grotesque ) an era which began in the 20s or 30s, and continues to flourish underground to this day. Often dismissed as pornographic and low-brow schlock, Ero-Guro artists often have a fascinating way of telling stories, they don't just visually disturb you, but often take you down a psychological trip like you never have before. However, many of these artists are very under-appreciated in the west sadly. In a world where Junji Ito is the only horror artist weebs in America can name, here's some great guro artists to get you started!
Love this guy, you've probably seen some of his portraits around the internet if you've lurked for long enough. His cutesey style and detailed anatomy is what I really enjoy about his work. Often very humourous in a dark, effed up way. My favourite story from his that comes to mind is from "Super Dimensional Love Gun" an anthology of some of his shorts. So There's this Wife who thinks her husband is cheating on her, she gets a friend to help her out and find him. The guy suggests that the best way to do it is by looking at the shape of other women's mouths, why? well in this world, everyone's mouth shape changes dramatically depending on the shape of their partner's penis. Both a weird and hilarious story with weird body horror in the mix, this is a good one to start of with, check it out!
If you're a fan of exploitation films or Torture Porn, you might have heard of the infamous "Guinea Pig" movies. A film series that captures the look of genuine snuff very well. To well infact, that Charlie Sheen himself thought it was real and called for a police investigation. What you might've not known is that one of the Co-Creators and Directors of this franchise, is none other than Manga Artist Hideshi Hino. His story telling is more by the books but it makes up for it with his unique art style! Very cartoony, but just as nightmare fuelish. If I were to recommend one of his works, I'd start of with Hell Baby, the story is sort of a Frankenstein type story, actually most of his stories have a theme of misunderstood and abused people, to the point where they themselves become the monsters they feared. Might seem a little Clichéd to some people, but it's a charming little story to me.
Just like Hideshi Hino, If you've seen this guy's work you probably watched the animated film "Midori" notorious for being banned in most parts of the world, including Japan...or you watched the bad live action film that came out in 2016. His work is the most realistic looking of the bunch, often adapting old japanese folk tales or original stories setting around 20s-50s era japan. Midori, a story about a young girl who is tricked into becoming a slave for a bunch of carnival freaks, is his most well known story around the globe. His stuff is hard to find on print but there's plenty of sites online that are translated.
There's so many great Artists out there who are a part of the Ero Guro movement, I could go on and on but I think it's best to leave you with these guys to check out as a start. If anybody has any weird or creepy artists to recommend, let me know! Peace
